The intersection of 32nd Street and Evergreen Way in Washougal, WA will be undergoing significant improvements from mid-October 2017 to early February 2018. Access to businesses will be available during construction, however, traffic delays associated with the intersection improvements should be expected. Alternative routes are shown on the accompanying map.
The project includes widening the curb returns at all four corners to allow for improved freight and vehicular mobility through the intersection. Other improvements include bike lanes on Evergreen Way west of 32nd Street, upgraded signals and detection for both traffic and pedestrians, lighting improvements, as well as new pavement and sidewalks at the intersection.
Total Project Cost including design, right of way acquisition, permitting and construction is $2,036,000. The project is funded by a combination of Surface Transportation Program federal funds ($1,000,000), Transportation Improvement Board state funds ($500,000) and City Traffic Impact Fees ($536,000).
The Surface Transportation Program (STP) provides flexible funding that may be used by states and localities for projects to preserve and improve the conditions and performance on any Federal-aid highway (32nd Street and Evergreen Way are considered federal-aid highways), bridge and tunnel projects on any public road, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, and transit capital projects, including intercity bus terminals.
The contractor for the project is McDonald Excavating, Inc. of Washougal, WA, who was the low bidder for the construction portion of the project at $1.468 million dollars.
Construction delays can be expected during the length of the project. Alternate routes for vehicles shown on the accompanying map are recommended during construction. Any closures of the road will have to be approved by the city in advance and signed appropriately by the contractor prior to implementing the closure. The contractor will not do closures during holidays.
The City will provide periodic updates as the project progresses.
