City of Washougal Provides 4th Quarter Update on PFAS Levels in Drinking Water

City of Washougal Latest News Posted on October 30, 2024

The City of Washougal is dedicated to keeping residents updated on the quality of their drinking water. Recent testing has revealed a slight rise in PFOS levels in two of the city’s wells, in regard to the EPA’s adopted (effective 2029) limit of 4 parts per trillion (ppt). These levels remain within the State Action Limit set by the Washington State Department of Health. All other tested substances (PFOA, PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, PFBS, and PFHxA) continue to fall below both EPA and state limits.

PFAS are synthetic chemicals, known as "forever chemicals," due to their persistence in the environment. They have been used in various consumer products and industrial processes since the 1940s. In response to the latest EPA guidelines, the City has been actively monitoring and addressing PFAS levels in the water supply. PFAS levels can fluctuate due to variations in sources, environmental conditions, water supply changes, and the movement of PFAS through the environment.

"While we acknowledge a slight increase in PFOS levels, we are pleased with our overall progress and remain dedicated to continuous monitoring and evaluation. Our top priority is to ensure that our drinking water stays safe and reliable," said Public Works Director Trevor Evers.

The City of Washougal’s ongoing initiatives include:

  • Testing the water supply: Operations staff continue to test and monitor water quality in compliance with state and federal requirements to ensure a safe water supply.
  • Evaluating treatment options: Water quality engineers are evaluating treatment technologies to remove PFAS from the water supply.
  • Finding long-term solutions: Expert scientists are investigating potential sources of PFAS and the extent of PFAS in the local groundwater supply.
  • Planning for the future: Future costs for PFAS treatment are included in the City’s long-range capital plans.

The newly adopted EPA regulations emphasize the importance of monitoring PFAS levels and taking corrective actions as needed. The City will continue to provide regular updates on testing results on a quarterly basis and efforts to manage PFAS. The next testing cycle will be in the first quarter of 2025.
