Changes are on the way at the Wastewater Treatment Plant!

About the Project

The City is undertaking improvements at the wastewater treatment plant, including the addition of: 

• odor control within the existing facility
• a bioselector structure
• enclosed biosolids handling facility to replace the sludge holding lagoons
• All construction will take place within the footprint of the existing wastewater treatment plant site.

Impacts

Construction has been planned so that there will not be a disruption in utility service. However, during construction (through fall 2026) nearby residents and businesses may notice:

• Heavy truck equipment entering and exiting Highway 14 from the wastewater treatment site to mobilize equipment and materials
• Noise from construction
• Odor from the decommissioning of the lagoons

Project Benefits

• Enables beneficial use of biosolids, the nutrient-rich product resulting from sewage treatment
• Reduces seasonal odors
• Reduces risks of sludge spill to the adjacent Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge
• Improves quality of water discharged to the Columbia River
• Reduces energy consumption at the facility 
• Accommodates anticipated growth
