Following the success of its inaugural Citizen Academy, the City of Washougal is thrilled to announce the second installment of this popular program, set to begin in the fall starting September 4 and runs through October 9, 2025. The Citizen Academy is a six-week course designed to strengthen community engagement by educating residents about the inner workings of local government.

“Our first academy was a huge success, and we’re incredibly excited to keep the momentum going,” said Rose Jewell, Community Engagement Manager and head of the Citizen Academy. “The energy and passion of our first group showed us just how much our residents care about their city. This program helps build trust, relationships, and an even stronger sense of community.”

Through the Citizens’ Academy, participants will develop a greater understanding of the roles and responsibilities of city government while engaging directly with city leaders. Graduates will be well-equipped to share their knowledge with friends, family, and neighbors, strengthening civic engagement throughout Washougal. Additionally, they will be encouraged to take active roles in local government through volunteer opportunities, boards, and commissions.

Participants will gain valuable insights into a variety of topics, including:

  • General Government
  • Finance and Budget
  • Community Development
  • Public Works
  • Public Safety
  • Community Services & Strategy

The Citizen Academy supports Washougal’s Strategic Plan priority of creating a Redefined Community Identity by fostering community pride, encouraging civic participation, and strengthening the city’s image as a connected and engaged community.

Residents interested in joining the Citizens’ Academy can apply by completing the online application available on the City of Washougal website.
