[ARCHIVED] Washougal Summer Scavenger Hunt Going on Now! (Aug. 20-27)

Scavenger-Hunt-News

City of Washougal is challenging local kids to be “on the lookout” for a wide variety of household and commonly seen items in their neighborhood as part of the Washougal Summer Scavenger Hunt.  This safe, new event kicks off Thursday, August 20 and ends Thursday, August 27 at Hathaway Park where participants may turn in their scavenger hunt cards for a prize from the City of Washougal.

“These have been a challenging few months for everyone,” said Washougal Mayor, Molly Coston. “It was a disappointment for us to cancel our community events due to the pandemic. So, as the summer is coming to an end, we thought it would be a wonderful idea to engage local kids with a fun activity that they can participate in safely around their homes.”

The Hunt features bingo-type sheets with colorful illustrations of common items for children to find. “We have created three differently themed cards for kids to try,” said Rose Jewell, Assistant to the Mayor and City Manager.  “Forage and Find features outdoor items such as a Y-shaped twig and yellow flower, Household Hunt asks kids to find things like a potted plant and toothpaste and Discovering Wonderful Washougal has them looking around their neighborhoods for objects such as a park bench or stop sign.”

Hunt cards can be found on the City of Washougal website at https://cityofwashougal.us/ScavengerHunt and can be printed at home or completed via smartphones or tablets. A small supply of pre-printed sheets will be available outside of the Washougal Community Library, 1661 C Street, Washougal.

Kids are asked to complete the sheets by marking found items in a line horizontally, vertically, or an “X.” The big challenge is to find and mark every item. Once a card or set of cards is completed, they can be redeemed for a prize from City of Washougal on Thursday, August 27 from 2-4pm at Hathaway Park. Cars can travel either east or westbound on G Street between 24th and 25th.  To minimize contact, families are asked to drive to the park and stay in their vehicles. For a low-contact option, families can take photos of their completed cards and submit them online at the city website. Then, participants just show the confirmation driving up to redeem the prize.

“City personnel and council members will collect the cards and give out the free prize,” explained Coston. “We will be practicing social distancing and COVID safety protocols. Please help us by wearing a mask and keeping a safe, six feet apart.”  The prize, which is a City of Washougal branded water bottle, is one per child, while supplies last.

“Although your City has been busy working for you through this time, we have missed seeing everyone,” said Coston. “We hope families will take advantage of this fun kid activity and take the opportunity to drive past to at least say hello.”
