City of Washougal Launches Citizen Academy to Strengthen Community Engagement

City of Washougal Latest News Posted on February 28, 2025

The City of Washougal is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural Citizen Academy, a dynamic six-week program designed to educate and engage residents in local government. This unique opportunity is open to Washougal residents who are active in their communities and eager to deepen their understanding of city operations. The inaugural academy will run April 17 through May 22, 2025.

The idea for the Citizens’ Academy emerged during the City Council’s Strategic Plan update as a way to foster greater transparency, understanding, and collaboration between the city government and the residents it serves.

“This program will empower residents with the knowledge they need to bring issues and concerns forward with greater effectiveness,” said Rose Jewell, Community Engagement Manager and head of the Citizen Academy. “We hope to build lasting relationships that create a more cohesive and caring community.”

Through the Citizens’ Academy, participants will develop a greater understanding of the roles and responsibilities of city government while engaging directly with city leaders. Graduates will be well-equipped to share their knowledge with friends, family, and neighbors, strengthening civic engagement throughout Washougal. Additionally, they will be encouraged to take active roles in local government through volunteer opportunities, boards, and commissions.

Participants will gain valuable insights into a variety of topics, including:

  • General Government
  • Finance and Budget
  • Community Development
  • Public Works
  • Public Safety
  • Community Services & Strategy

How to Appy

Residents interested in joining the Citizens’ Academy can apply by completing the online application available on the City of Washougal website. Only fifteen applicants will be selected for this pilot program, with selections made by the Community Services Committee. Those not selected for this session will be considered for future academies.

More Information

The program is free of charge, and all materials will be provided. The academy will run for six weeks with sessions held on Thursdays from 6-8 PM at Washougal City Hall. Participants are expected to attend at least five sessions though full participation is strongly encouraged.
